In my review, I wanted to emphasize thatRebirthis more confident than its predecessor.

What I didnt have time to mention is how this applies to the RPGs iconoclastic approach to gender norms.

Cloud and Dio shake hands

For instance,Rebirthmakes it very easy to form a homoromantic reading of Cloud and Sephiroths relationship.

Clouds thoughts, intrusive or otherwise, are consistently occupied by Sephiroth.

However, the intimate body language and conversations between the two are consistently loaded with subtext.

Sephiroth embraces Cloud

Cloud and Sephiroths relationship is consistently colored in this way, infused with this transgressive closeness.

When it comes to lesbian relationships, things are a bit more subtle.

Intense and lingering looks between the two characters arent uncommon, either.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Rebirtheven includes explicitly queer non-player characters (NPCs), in an exciting move forFinal Fantasy.

Even beforeFinal Fantasy 7 Remakewas released, queer readings of its central characters were common.

Struggles with identity are a key theme inRebirth, too.

Cloud and Barret speak in the Gold Saucer Ferris wheel

Cloud must wrestle with Sephiroths influence and come to terms with his past.

The main story charts his harrowing battle to maintain a sense of self despite external influences and pressures.

Theres a huge amount of introspection and self-discovery inRebirth, themes thatll likely resonate with queer players.

Nailed it, I know.

That said, LGBTQ+ representation has been something of a rocky road for the series.

No longer is Clouds transformation the target of cheap jokes, say Vosmeer and Heijmen.

As Cloud says once Tifa realizes that hes in drag: Nailed it, I know.

He cries openly and provides consistent emotional support to the rest of the party.

Barrets love and regard for his adopted daughter is especially moving.

Rebirthisnt afraid to transgress when necessary.
